Snow Monkeys & Island Hopper
February, 2025
Jigokudani Yaen-Koen (snow monkey park) is located near Nagano. It's been home to wild Japanese macaques since 1964. They're the only monkeys living in cold weather extremes. With the temperature sometimes reaching ten degrees below zero, it's no surprise they choose to soak in the hot springs!

After enjoying monkey antics, I headed south. Non-stop, it's a seven-hour flight from Guam to Honolulu. If you have the time and want a more adventurous route, you can take United Airlines' Island Hopper. This special route makes five stops on its way to Hawaii, hitting some of the world's most remote inhabited islands in Micronesia as well as the Marshall Islands. In total, the route covers 4,365 miles.
It's a 40 minute walk from the parking lot to the monkeys. Bundle up, Nagano is freezing! They also rent crampons. If you don't have rugged, no-slip boots, I would highly recommend them.
